Newham Kaleidoscope: Free exhibition showcasing the borough’s art scene as part of London Festival of Architecture 2023

Posted 19 June 2023

Populo Living - Newham’s housing company has teamed up with the artists from Fire Station Arts to launch Newham Kaleidoscope, a free open exhibition celebrating the Newham art scene at Applecart Arts in Plashet Park, East Ham.

On Friday night, the opening of the exhibition drew in a crowd of over 150 attendees, to see over 80 captivating works on display created by more than 40 talented artists hailing from all over the borough. Newham Kaleidoscope is in response to this year’s London Festival of Architecture’s theme ‘In Common’ and showcases a kaleidoscope of styles, themes, and techniques, each piece offering a unique glimpse into the imagination of the artists from the borough.

Michael Holland, Deputy CEO from Populo Living: ‘Populo recognises the importance of Art in Architecture and its contribution to the built environment, and that’s why we have co-organised this event as part of the 2023 London Festival of Architecture.

The response from local Newham artists has been amazing. It’s exciting to see such high-quality work showcasing the depth of Newham’s creative talent and serving as an example of how art can bring together Newham’s diverse communities in common appreciation.’

The exhibition features a children’s creative corner providing young artists with the opportunity to add their own twist to print-offs of a selection of works on display - or create their own new masterpieces.

A range of works on display are for sale and are commission-free, therefore artists will receive 100% of the proceeds. If you would like to purchase one of the pieces on sale, you can contact the artist directly using the link under their biography here.

The exhibition will be in place from the 17 to 25 June and is available for all to view at Applecart Arts Café, a grade II listed Passmore Edwards Building, a former Victorian library in East Ham’s Plashet Park. Tickets can be reserved here.
